Convicted of
Assault on a Child Causing Death
Sentence
25 Years to Life
Released
April 3, 2020
Suzanne Johnson was wrongfully convicted of the death of a child she was providing childcare to. The child fell out of a highchair, and appeared fine, but ultimately injuries from the fall caused her death. The jury did not believe the fall was the cause of death, Suzanne was convicted of assault on a child causing death, and she was sentenced to 25 years to life.
Modern science relating to baby deaths supported Suzanne’s claim of innocence, and in 2020 Governor Newsom granted her clemency petition. She was freed after spending 21 years in prison for a crime she did not commit.
